COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Dermatology course will focus on common, everyday dermatologic conditions seen in practice, with an emphasis on practical diagnosis and treatment options. Each day, the course will begin with an intensive series of theme-focused lectures; subjects covered will include allergies, skin infections, endocrine skin diseases, feline skin diseases, scaling diseases, nodular and draining skin lesions, and nail disease. Each evening, we will highlight the practical value of the day’s lecture material with a "Putting It Together for Practice" session. These sessions will use case discussions, interactive exercises, "dry lab" activities, and visual tutorials to show you how the day’s learnings can be applied to your practice tomorrow.

Another important theme of the course is ear disease, a common concurrent issue in patients with skin disease. A full day of lecture will be complemented by a 3-hour wet lab where participants can practice ear examination, video otoscopy, and ear irrigation techniques. Additional practical skills taught during laboratory sessions include instruction in skin cytology, dermatophyte culture, and interpretation of serum-based allergy tests.

In order to provide the best learning experience, registrants are required to complete a series of readings and a self-assessment exercise PRIOR TO the course. This foundation material will not be covered in the lectures; rather, it will be built upon. Come prepared for an interesting and dynamic week of practical approaches to skin disease!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

As a result of attending this course, registrants will be able to:

  • use serum-based allergy testing and immunotherapy appropriately.
  • establish treatment approaches for recurrent ear disease.
  • use skin and ear cytology in the diagnosis of skin disease.
