Honored for International Outreach

NAVC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HONORED FOR INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH - GAINESVILLE, FL — Colin F. Burrows, BVetMed, PhD, MRCVS, DACVIM, NAVC Executive Director, recently received the American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2007 12th International Veterinary Congress prize.

Awarded during the AVMA’s annual meeting in July, the prize recognizes outstanding contributions to international understanding of veterinary medicine.

“I nominated Dr. Burrows for his tireless work on behalf of the veterinary community throughout the world,” said Richard C. Grambow, DVM, NAVC Past President 1992-3 and six-year AVMA Veterinary Service Council member. “In addition to lecturing in other countries, Dr. Burrows continuously meets with other international veterinary figures to help them establish their own educational development programs.”

Grambow cites the NAVC International Scholarship Program as a highlight for veterinarians in third-world countries. Every year, several veterinarians are chosen to attend the NAVC Conference in January at no cost. NAVC handles all travel, housing and registration fees. Recipients have come from Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina, India, the Slovak Republic, Cuba, Estonia and Latvia.

“I began as a quiet country veterinarian in rural England,” said Burrows, “with education and nurturing, I have grown into my current roles. It is a great honor to receive this award, but even more gratifying to know these programs will further the veterinary profession for years to come."

Burrows has lent his expertise to the annual NAVC del LAVC in Lima, Peru, Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC) in Barcelona, Spain and Federation of Asian Small Animal Veterinary Associations (FASAVA) Congress in Bangkok, Thailand.

As a board-certified veterinary internist, Burrows specializes in the study of canine and feline gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatic disease. His research has focused on canine gastrointestinal motility in health and disease, and on the relationship between diet and gastrointestinal disease.

He has delivered continuing education presentations in more than 50 countries and is an honorary member of both the Austrian and Russian Small Animal Veterinary Associations. Burrows is also chairman of the department of small animal clinical sciences and chief of staff of UF’s small animal hospital.
